You should read blindsight by Peter watts if you ever get the chance, it’s a “hard sci-fi” (reviewer’s words, not mine) book that goes into this a good bit. It’s set in the future and the way he portrays future peoples understanding of bipolar disorder and multiple personality disorder is fascinating
