English is spoken by about 1.35 billion people (native & non native). That is 17% of the world, INCLUDING people with difficult/thick accents. If your goal is to speak with as many people as possible, this is not realistically feasible with just one language. Saying “well english is the most spoken” is just an excuse to be lazy from my impression. People also forget that not too long ago French was the language of prestige— the situation could change at any time.
Not to mention that because we speak the language of commerce and business (currently) we have the PRIVILEGE of CHOOSING a language that interests us- people who learn English in school often end up hating it because to them it’s not a product of culture and conduit of art, it is just a tool. We are lucky enough not to have that feeling.
