I actually think in the case of America specifically, gun control simply would not work. There are more guns than people in this country by a significant margin. I think the “if you banned guns then only criminals would have them” argument actually does ring true HERE in a way it would not in the countries people cite as successes of gun control.
It would be somewhat effective at preventing mass shootings, but not the vast majority of gun homicides. The majority of gun murders aren’t mass shootings, they’re gang hits, and gangsters would still have loads of guns if America put strict gun controls in place due to the sheer volume of guns in this country.
people don’t get guns out of thin air most guns sourced in gang activity are bought legally and then have the serial removed. it’s very common to have someone who has an out of state id buy guns in a less regulated state to bring them into a more regulated one (specifically states that don’t do federal background checks or allow for private sales with little to no regulation) since importing guns illegally is difficult and expensive already.
