That’s true but African countries rarely if ever take responsibility for their role in slavery it is usually blamed on foreign nations.

Was it independent citizens running their own operations or agents of an organized state themselves conducting this?

Im not really sure. I know a lot of slaves where prisoners from wars/conquest so that makes me think it’s probably done by a warlord or city state, but I imagine there where some individual operations as well.
