Yes, the ideology that specifically targets them is attractive to them. I don’t think flirting with conservative ideology makes someone bad forever. All this post does is make every white dude who sees it feel like they can’t join the left because they flirted with conservative thought at some point. Which is fucking stupid.
I mean, as a socialist white dude who flirted with conservative ideology at like 15 years old, I can tell you with high confidence how this kind of stuff makes people in that area of the discourse feel. We cannot punish people for having flirted with conservatism early in their political journey. I know damn well that all of their ideas that I found appealing in that time of my life were LIES.
Including the lie that “the Left” hated me for how I was born. It’s not good strategy to feed into that lie. That’s all I’m really getting at. Conservatives paint the left as “demonizing white people” in order to turn already financially, politically, etc. insecure white folks to their side, the Right. Absolutely we need to make an effort to decentralize whiteness and maleness, I’ve seen this myself with the sheer ease with which I was elevated to chair of a leftist org I was NOT prepared to run
I was elevated to leadership in a way I don’t think I was prepared for, and I can’t help but think, the fact that I was a white dude was part of why people thought I could lead, it’s why I thought I could lead until I actually had to do it. That is an issue to critique. Being like “white people fighting the conservative urges lmao” in a non-organizing space just feels shame-y to the un-initiated in these conversations. There’s two POVs to consider here, the initiated and the un-initiated.
