It started with establishment of a large authoritarian government and promises of achieving a socialist utopia through strength and power.

Whether or not they actually were socialist is up for debate, but Hitler and his followers definitely identified themselves as such.

Mostly that they claimed to be and that’s how they built their initial following. They did a few socialist things here and there but they really stopped with that when WWII came around.
