They didn’t kill enough gangsters, the 18th amendment actually worked pretty well for its aims. Spousal abuse went down, drunk accidents and fights went down. The country just found itself amidst a depression with limited technological capacity to substantively act against criminals and the need to raise tax revenues/overall industry to save the state

It was enough for women to start a whole temperance movement and political parties around it in which one of their primary grievances was spousal abuse from the alcohol, which no longer found itself in the discourse of public record nearly as much once the law was passed

because the 18th amendment was the GOAL of the women's temperance movement. correlation does not equal causation. racism is one of the biggest grievances before the civil rights movement, does that mean that when it was relegated as a grievance, racism had ended? of course not. now i don't use that analogy as a platform for you to insert your beliefs about the civil rights movement. it is to show that media grievances aren't dispositive of statistics and they're often exacerbated politically

The 18th amendment was repealed and we went back to a lot of the same issues that plagued us before, some of which were temporarily offset via the spur of economic development post war. I admit material conditions play a significant role in history, although I am no dialectical materialist. Post civil rights we’ve seen regular mobilization of black people airing grievances from the black panthers to the recent BLM movement—bc there were still issues that went unresolved, bc the CRA didn’t go far
