Democrats are not allowing people to choose their candidate. That’s why sanders got the boot in 2016, that’s why they picked Biden in 2020, that’s why they held no election for Harris in 2024

The DNC sucks and no one is denying that, but they at least acknowledge the reality of climate change and have taken minor steps to adress it

Do you think the United States of America is a huge issue in terms of climate change? Not china or India? Wanting to cripple the us economy won’t do anything

China and India are big problems but China is making HUGE leaps in renewable energy (the fastest growing energy sector). Honestly NOT going for green energy will cripple the US economy way more in long term, because China will be light years ahead of us as the world turns to renewables

Also, even though the USA is not the sole source of emissions, limiting our emissions would still do a lot and could influence allied nations to do the same.

Our allied nations are already doing that it’s the other countries that aren’t. Also I’ll never trust anything china says or does. That being said maybe we should have more nuclear energy instead of making people scared of it. By the way I’m not giving up my car when a cargo ship will produce more carbon emissions in an hour than I will in several lifetimes

I agree nuclear energy would be great! We should def invest more into it. The one thing is that it takes a very long time to get nuclear running, whereas renewables are quick and cheap. It makes the most sense to invest in nuclear for the long term, but continue to expand clean renewable energy in the short term.

Also, it’s ok to drive a car, I also drive one. There’s really no getting around emissions. In an ideal world, the government would create better infrastructure so people could walk, bike, or use public transportation more often (and this would also probably help people stay fit) but we don’t live in that word and sometimes you have to use a car. You shouldn’t feel guilty about that

I don’t think producing solar panels or wind power is the best way to do “sustainable” energy. They are weather dependent and aren’t cheap at all. We just need to invest in nuclear power. Honestly solar farms and wind farms are a huge waste of money and space. Maybe if you out panels on roofs but that doesn’t away work

I think there is a big conundrum, like you mentioned, where it feels pointless to reduce our personal emissions when they’re a drop in the bucket compared to everything else. And I agree with that (I take small steps like limiting my beef intake and trying to reuse, taking the train when I can, but I recognize it’s not really doing anything). That’s why in my opinion it’s important to pressure and elect politicians to take strong administrative action to prepare the USA for the future and —-

Protect its citizens from the effects of climate change (this will especially hurt poor southern communities). Circling back to the original point of the post, the Republican Party is pretty staunchly against green energy and any type of climate action, which is why they’re a threat to the environment

I’m all for nuclear power! The thing with renewables is just that they are so much faster to set up and we don’t have time to spare when it comes to this stuff, although I don’t think it’s wise to base the entire grid off renewables. I kind of consider them as a temporary measure — and they’re effective for things like using solar panels as roofing for a parking lot, etc, where the space would otherwise go to waste

I’ll agree with you that Republican Party does fail on environmental issues. I think most republicans do care about the environment they just believe the whole climate change/green energy is bs. I mean which party is stereotypically more outdoorsy? When you belittle someone and say their truck is killing the environment they aren’t going to like you or listen to your cause. If the whole climate change demonization got cut and shifted to environmental conservation I think more people like it

I agree that most conservatives care about the environment — I forget how it polls but iirc the vast majority of Americans think the environment is a concern. Also totally agree that the narrative of personal responsibility sucks, and it’s one that has been pushed specifically by big oil to shift blame away from themselves. Whether the narrative should be one of environmental conservation or of patriotic sacrifice (I’ve heard that one suggested), I don’t really know which one would work better -

- but either way we need politicians on the liberal side who will stop shilling the big oil personal responsibility narratives, and politicians on the conservative side to acknowledge environmental degradation and climate change as real and a concern
