A lot of countries have been selling their US reserves (bonds which act as dollars with a small interest earned over time). Those reserves these countries held flood the markets with what are effectively dollars. And as you know as the supply of something in the market increases, its price decrease. So now we have a lot of dollars (in the form of bonds) floating around and countries not wanting to use dollars (decreased demand). This has weakened the dollar’s value against other currencies.

It used to be similar because of COVID. There was a brief period when 1 EUR = 1 USD. But for decades the euro has generally been worth more. It’s especially bad rn because the USD has lost about 7-8% of its value since January

The argument can definitely be made by saying that this is because of tariffs insofar as countries like Canada have said they will start selling their US bonds due to the tariffs increases.

I was in the UK last month and I stupidly was like “oh £12? Not bad” then I was shocked when I got a $16 charge on my credit card 💀

The concern about the increasing debt also makes some “bond vigilantes” basically start dumping their bonds in protest
