Race is an artificial construct. You can’t get a coherent classification because it’s a fake category. “White” is essentially whatever Anglo-Americans consider as the “in group.” The racial categories used by American society do not align with genetics or linguistics.

India is incredibly diverse and the census bureau does not have the time or knowledge to classify all of those groups 😭

A great example of this is that middle easterners were broadly considered white in the United States during the period where their immigration was mostly Lebanese and Syriac christians. Perception shifted when more Muslims immigrated and then when 9/11 occurred and anti-Muslim bigotry was amplified. Middle easterners are still considered white on the census. But *socially* they now tend to be excluded from that category. Similar thing has happened with Mexicans.
