the person with a million dollars is most likely still in the same class as the working class, it’s not a matter of net worth that determines your category but your relationship to the means of production (do you own them or do you sell your labor?). some people will straddle the two classes due to how they operate but more often than not the straddlers tend to be in unstable positions that prevent them from achieving ruling class status
the petty bourgeoisie appears to share both the roles of the exploiters and the exploited but they are perceived as an unstable class that continues to shrink as systems crush or absorb their ownership by big capital (e.g. corporations will buy out small businesses). in this sense, i would consider them more of a hybrid case/variation within the working class as opposed to a distinct, separate class
How would you classify people who are undeniably rich, but still not to the extent of a multi billionaire? I’m thinking of upper class families who have multimillions, own businesses, assets, property, etc but still not to the extent of someone like Jeff Bezos. They still harbor others labor to gain more wealth but just on a smaller scale
i would classify them as working class with a closer proximity to the ruling class than traditional workers are, the petty bourgeoisie does consist of small-scale capitalists who exploit labor and live off ownership, but they don’t have the scale or systemic power of the ruling class. their position is still contradictory and unstable in spite of proximity: they’re still subordinate to big capital and vulnerable of being outcompeted, though not as vulnerable as the traditional worker.
