Who is your favorite American Populist? Historical or current, ironic or sincere. Huey Long is mine. Not for HOI4 LARP reasons. I’m from Louisiana and he’s just such a fascinating, tragic figure to learn about. He lived a Shakespearean life.

In 2nd place, for a similar reason but a lot more ironic, Edwin Edwards. Dude was governor for 16 years, was one of the most openly corrupt politicians in history. His biggest achievement, in my opinion, was keeping David Duke (the Klan Leader) out of office in 1991.

My pick would be the politicians of Virginia’s reconstruction-era Readjuster Party, because it’s so unexpected. It was founded by this dude, William Mahone. He was a confederate general and railroad tycoon. So that comes with some expectations as to his policies. But astonishingly, his party was a populist coalition of poor black and white voters, and it created the first state-funded black university in the whole country.

Real bumper sticker for Edwards in that 1991 election. He ended up going to prison later in his life, just to show how much of a crook he was (and how little he hid it)

"The only thing we have in common is we’re both wizards under the sheets." Quote from Edwin about his opponent, former Grand Wizard of the KKK, David Duke.

It’s so sad that Edwin will never have a HOI4 mod to make him famous 😔 bro is literally one of the funniest figures in American history

It’s just so unexpected that a bunch of wealthy ex-confederates ended up leading the party who would significantly progress black rights, create public education in the state, and seek to dismantle the power of the planter elite. Formerly enslaved people were elected by this party alongside confederate generals.
