Like, if you can argue against their point on legitimate grounds, and happen to insult them personally afterwards, or even better just call the argument stupid and not them directly, you haven’t broken any logical rules at that point. At worst you got mean unnecessarily, but as long as it’s not “You’re <flaw> therefore you’re wrong” then it’s not an ad hominem.

People who don’t actually take a couple logic classes love throwing out fallacy names without understanding what they actually mean. Ad hominem is an informal fallacy, which means it’s just not an argument. Insults aren’t arguments. Insults also don’t detract from actual formally valid arguments.
