i think people need to adopt the social norms of the countries they move to idc what food u eat, how u dress, what u look like etc, but stop fucking staring at me!! there needs to be free classes for ppl to teach them abt those social differences

i think there’s a lot of meeting in the middle that has to be done. people should be tolerant of differences but also there should be an effort to learn how things work/customs in a new country (i say this as someone who has done extended stays outside of the US)

like im all for migration. cultures should mix and people should bring w them their own ways and traditions while also learning how not to be unintentionally disrespectful in their new country i also think we need to give more women and children asylum citizenship instead of always men coming to work. that’d solve a lot of controversy people have about immigration in general

also there should be free classes to learn the language. obviously they can still use their native language but just to help ppl get around easier, we need classes for conversational english, ones that help with understanding bureaucratic process, and general adaptation classes (if wanted/needed)

They should still be voluntary, nothing good has ever come from forced assimilation. Especially in a country founded for and run by immigrants

i was just in paris actually. got stared at a lot ofc (by men and women) but it was never dangerous like the media says. trash yes. danger no (this photo is in no way the norm tho. just the worst i saw it)

what should be forced is knowing new customs, not enforced to use them and never enforced to forget your own but i think ppl should come in wanting to be respectful (for example not staring since they know it makes us uncomfortable) and if they dont have that basic respect to want to try, that upsets me

I’m sorry but your comfort isn’t the end all be all though, you know? why is someone staring suddenly a sign of disrespect? what if they found you attractive? what if they thought you did something confusing? what if they’re looking at something behind you? this really is not that deep imo, and is definitely not worth risking the slippery slope of empowering a state to enforce a “cultural standard” if that makes sense.

especially since, as 1 said, this is inherently a nation created by, and consisting of, immigrants. it does not matter if we are born here, we are all able to trace our roots back and find a generation that immigrated here, unless we have ancestry with one of the indigenous tribes. it’s literally the “pulling the ladder up behind you” meme

someone staring as been a sign of disrespect in the US for at least multiple generations. i have never known a time it wasnt if they find me attractive thats even worse. why is a 50+ year old man starring at me that hard and not breaking eye contact when i give back a creeped out look? why are 40+ year old women looking and shaking their heads at me for having my shoulders out in 90 degree weather?? that is rude and idc if its normal to them

its incredibly disrespectful to come into a new place and make people feel uncomfortable. when i visit other countries i learn their customs before going. i would expect the same effort if youre literally PERMANENTLY MOVING THERE

okay obviously that context changes my analysis a bit, but you’re acting as if that behavior is related to immigration and one’s culture instead of people just lacking common courtesy the shit you’re complaining about has literally nothing to do with immigration💀 and if anything, us Americans are far more guilty of that lack of common courtesy than most other places, as you’re sitting there talking about “culture” and assimilation😭

i met some serbians and slovanians actually in hungary. they were super chill. i only notice staring from middle eastern and indian people (no shade to them, just my experience). and the hungarian older men stare too but more like an emotionless “im dead inside” stare. and they stare at everything like that, not just people. they also stare at men just as much they do women
