Digital ID is getting closer to a reality in the US I’m afraid. Texas is now requiring age verification for many of the apps in the App Store. Governments all over are using this time of political unrest to take advantage of you and your families.

What exactly is “digital ID”?

As a free market conservative, I don’t like where this country is headed. Both democrats and republicans act like they are pro regulation now for all of the wrong reasons. The dems tried to force vaccines on us and their covid restrictions really hurt small businesses and the mental health and development of the youth. I’m fine with the vaccine, but I was not a fan of the government forcing it on people.

Trump on the other hand is giving the wealthy and big corporations tax breaks while the middle and lower class suffer. He thinks the executive branch should have too much power and he censors people who question his authority. Big government doesn’t care about you and me. They just want to control your life.

And I know I’m contradicting myself, but the only time I don’t mind regulation is when corporations are so big that they don’t have enough competition. Big corporations go against the free market.

Digital ID would be Palantir’s wet dream. It is like your physical ID with all of your information in one place. I’m just skeptical of it because it gives the government more control over you and me. Don’t like what you say? They have all of your info in one place, so it would be easy for them to track you down. It also poses security risks like the massive Discord data breach that recently occurred with millions of IDs leaked to hackers.

Right, but this is already the case, so I feel like fear over “digital ID” doesn’t make sense. Why not just say it’s fear over the surveillance state? I know I’m splitting hairs here, but my driver’s license has already had a digital version for 5 years now (haven’t even tried it at a bar though, they’d probably be like “wtf? no we need the real one”). Every passport issued in the last decade has had a chip inside, and for a few years you’ve had to scan your face to leave or enter the country…

…by air (you can opt out for the leaving part but the airline agents apparently get pissed)

I do get what you are saying right now. I don’t like the surveillance state situation. I just think Digital ID is one of the best examples of large steps governments are taking to control every aspect of your life. Maybe you are saying digital ID isn’t that bad, but where do we draw the line then? The government will continue making small steps because they know people aren’t paying attention enough. They push this stuff when people are so distracted on other issues.

Take the Patriot Act for example. People were okay with it because they were more willing to give up freedom because of a disaster. Once the government takes your freedom, it’s very difficult to get it back.

Oh 100%. I guess I’m just being picky about the naming lol. I don’t think the concept of an ID on your phone (as opposed to a physical one) is bad at all, but it really matters what the ID is used for. Using it to get access to discord channels is wild, and I think I’m fortunate enough to not have had mine leaked when I ended up having to verify my age while in the UK on vacation

Just because it doesn’t seem bad now doesn’t mean it won’t be. I know this is pessimistic, but you don’t want to let them pave the road towards a surveillance state. Much of the “intent” is to keep minors safe online. However, that can fade quickly into controlling information for legal adults too. Parents should be more proactive rather than excessive state intervention.

Oh I agree 100%. Just put parental controls on the network or something, don’t make everyone send their ID because they want to watch porn or something 😭
