As a civil servant this would also at least partially address the enormous erosion of benefits and relative pay in many civil service jobs. In my division we haven’t even had a pension since the 80s even though it’s federal work.

To be fair AmeriCorps already pays an award after your service. Same with Peace Corps. Nothing like the GI bill which is way more substantial- you’d probably be better off just .. working? But it IS a thing.

This can also be solved without conscription, mind you. Just …. Normal laws that mandate employers to give things like paid maternal leave which even North Korea does 💀

I was talking about free college, never said anything about conscription. Now to be fair I do think ideally college ought to be free for everyone but that’s a different conversation
