i think muslims take themselves much more seriously than other religions bc they believe their book is the verbatim word of god and are therefore prone to extremism based on that perceived absolute truth

It is believed that the Bible is the word of God. Historically, Christianity was more intolerant towards minority faiths than Islam was, because Christianity doesn’t have a designation of “people of the book.” You are either a Christian or you are designated as an “infidel”

As an example, Christianity and Judaism were both marginalized in Muslim Iberia, but they were tolerated and persisted. But when Iberia was re-Christianized, Islam and Judaism did not receive the same tolerance, and were completely eradicated.

The western world’s modern tolerance towards minority faiths is a product of continued secularization and lessened reliance on fundamentalist Christianity. Meanwhile, the Muslim world is experiencing a resurgence of fundamentalism that is decreasing religious tolerance. It’s not some atomic difference between religions, it’s just differing degrees of fundamentalism.
