Before 1954, the Pledge of Allegiance didn't have the "under God" part. The effort to incorporate it into our pledge was endorsed by president Eisenhower, but the campaign was first spearheaded by the Catholic Christian organization The Knights of Columbus. They wanted to distinguish ourselves from the Soviet Union, which never outlawed religion officially but took efforts to dilute its presence in society.
