the people protesting him were upset about: 1) mamdani not arresting netanyahu 2) mamdani not stopping land sales in synagogues 3) him keeping jessica tisch 4) him keeping that one police squad mostly the first two. which is crazy because he cant do anything about those without getting booted from office or being in serious legal trouble. the second two, sure protest that but the protest wasnt about that really
Mamdani has a habit of SAYING one thing and DOING another thing. He says he’s anti-zionist, calls Netanyahu a war criminal, and makes the empty threat of his arrest. Then, he keeps the Strategic Response Group (despite saying he’ll remove it) which arrests Pro-Palestine protestors and uses his anti-semitism to fund the Jewish Heritage Museum, a Zionist organization. He is in favor of Israel as a “state with equal rights”, an utter fantasy…
…Nonetheless, Mamdani is an incredibly valuable asset. He is a demonstration of the inevitable shortcomings of electoralism. By a long shot, he is one of the best politicians in the country. Despite this in the most favorable interpretation, structural obstacles keep him from acting in an anti-zionist, anti-imperialist fashion. In a more cynical interpretation, he is controlled opposition. If this is the best that electoral politics can do, maybe it’s time to pursue other options?
To be fair, man kinda ran on anti-Zionism and then claimed to have “found out” he can’t do shit about it as a Mayor (as everyone with eyes to see could tell). I remember when his YouTube video from like a month ago about Nethanyu dropped and it starts with him listing Netanyahu’s crimes and then that he’s gonna do something and I went “oh cool he’s going to do something” only for him to immediately go “apparently I can’t do that as Mayor of New York :( I didn’t know I couldn’t snap my fingers
And have the NYP arrest a foreign leader of an allied nation :( :( :(“ like dude??? I like his rent and actual Mayor-based policies but every time he goes out of his way to bring up things he literally can’t do anything about it was adding fuel to a fire that was inevitably going to turn on him.
