I am Italian, and I know most Italian Americans tend to celebrate this day, but fuck Columbus. He was genuinely an awful, awful person. Italians should instead try to find an Italian American who actually represents us well, there are plenty of them out there. Happy indigenous people’s day. And again, FUCK COLUMBUS.

I hope you understand the importance of Columbus Day to the Italian American community. It’s about more than just a man. Italian Americans helped to build this country. We deserve a day.

That’s fucked up why are Italian Americans so into a guy who was charged with genocide, and was considered excessively cruel by a government that owned slaves?

It’s not about Columbus. It’s about recognizing Italian Americans for the contribution to this country.

It’s not about Christopher Columbus. In 1891, 11 brave Italian Americans were lynched from the same tree for a crime they did not commit. No one was arrested. The measly shit little gift the federal government gave in response wasn’t even money for the families affected, no it was just a day off of work. so fine, change the name. But you change that name to another prominent Italian American or Italian American appreciation day. Indigenous peoples day can be on a different day. We deserve this.

Yeah, and the Lord Of The Flies isn’t about a Lord of flies. They called it Columbus Day so that they could celebrate a historical figure relating to American history, while not saying to the general public of the day was about Italian Americans. There was a strong anti-Italian American sentiment in the country at the time.

Yeah, and he’s dead. But the same federal government who allowed this tragedy to happen with no punishment still exists to this day. No one calls October Italian American history month but they do call Columbus Day, Columbus Day. In indigenous people want their own holiday? Great they can go make their own fucking holiday. This is Columbus Day. It is about Italian Americans, and Italian Americans only.

Bro is okay with celebrating genocidal rapists. Stfu, and by the way, kidnapped African slaves and indigenous peoples were the ones who built this country, not those white lazy mfs. This white pos is really trying to justify all that by saying “just give us Italians one day to be proud”. Stfu.

You ignorant, motherfucker. I am not defending Columbus. Columbus can eat a bag of dicks for what he did. First of all he was northern Italian, not southern. He stuck his nose up at all other kinds of Italians and then he goes and works for the fucking Spanish. Italians were not considered white. Go look up some political commentary back then you twit. Teddy Roosevelt once said he thought it was a good thing that Italians were being murdered in the streets. Pick up a book.

Leave it to white America the diminish another cultures struggles. That day was gifted to the Italian American community after the atrocity of the New Orleans lynching. The single largest mass lynching in US history no one was arrested, no federal investigation. This holiday is all we got from that. Columbus was an animal, and the holiday should absolutely be renamed. But it belongs to Italian Americans.

Columbus Day was meant to celebrate Italian Americans it’s not just Columbus. I’m not saying he was a good guy by any means but he did something very important in world history. Bingo my friend! People like to pretend that just because we’re not stigmatized against nearly as much anymore that we can’t bring up our own history. The only reason we are as accepted as we are is because our people conformed to white America. They were hard-working immigrants, who realized what’s more important for their families future.

Free speech doesn’t mean people should just accept your opinion no matter what. It means you are able to say whatever the fuck you want. There will always be someone who doesn’t agree with you or wants to not have someone else shouting their opinion in your face like it’s the only right one.

i love you italian americans and i understand where you are coming from, but they did not name it columbus day just thinking about the lynchings. two things can be true at once, and it’s very important we acknowledge both. just like we can call it indigenous day, maybe consider calling it Little Sicily remembrance day or Mantraga remembrance day. then we can all learn the true history instead of Prager Us spanish columbus
