The American flag is a hate symbol and I’m tired of pretending it’s not

I used to want one of those nice knitted sweaters with the american flag and now I have it in my mind that I will buy one when/if I’m actually proud of where this country stands. I’d be embarrassed to wear it now

The beauty of it though is that we can work to make it represent whatever we want. Betsy Ross sure as hell didn’t design it to be a hate symbol.

It only is if you let the republicans control the narrative

Because keep in mind, the US definitely has a mixed bag of history, but it’s no use focusing on only the bad parts. The US flag also represents the liberators that destroyed the original Nazis, for example.

I also worry that this gives the right an easy slam dunk to pretend that they’re the patriotic ones to a country they’re stripping for parts. We need to reclaim it so we can show people what real patriotism is, and that’s hard work to make the country you love into a better place for everybody. The beauty of America is that it’s an eternal work in progress, which we can always make better through hard work.

I know it’s hard to paste a link in comments, but I highly recommend this excerpt written by Nikole Hannah-Jones, the creator of the 1619 project for The NY Times. https://pulitzercenter.org/sites/default/files/excerpt_from_the_idea_of_america_by_nikole_hannah-jones.pdf
