The virus needs hosts to spread and if it kills them at such a high rate it can’t go anywhere

All it needs to do is evolve faster transmission, and it has every reason to do so (as you just explained yourself).
And viruses evolve neckbreakingly fast

So apparently this virus is “stable” genetically it’s been sitting in rodents for millions of years and they can’t just shift to evolve better traits anywhere near as fast as Covid
