He’s not required to. What is funny is even when you think you’re among the social majority, you still have to mask your statements with precursors like “very funny how” to give you an out incase your wrong or someone pushes back. It’s like some sort of emotional guard you all still put up even when talking to each other. Do you ever wonder who you are without that mask? I bet it’s someone awesome. (That’s not sarcasm, I’ve seen people take the defensive political mask off before)

Nah. I care so little about them that I rarely think about them. I do hope they can get the help they need one day, but I have better things to worry about in life than other people’s self-destructive behavior.

I thought it was a biproduct? Like the few people I would call friends who became trans for awhile never had an issue with that talking point. It was my girlfriends who were like “why is me being a woman being talked about by a congressional committee right now?” (Paraphrasing) obviously not them specifically but you get the idea. Whatever it was that made a woman a woman was being debated both by politicians and online like they must meet some behavioral or dress code.

From my memory it came from the initial bathroom bans around ten years ago where people were all “well that’s a man in a dress” or something like that to talk about trans people and why they shouldn’t be allowed in the spaces their gender identity aligns with

I mean that does make sense why people were trying to tie it to clothing/presentation then. I’m sure the retail make up and designer industries looooved that.

It’s still going on though. Like it’s been a topic for a decade at this point. Trans people are still being discriminated against and attacked. And the whole “debating what a woman is” thing has always been used as a way to invalidate said group

I think one of the turn off switches for conservatives (I’m not conservative I’m just often surrounded by them physical location wise) is when you say someone is being attacked to a conservative, that means “someone is physically being attacked, time to use my gun!” And when it’s not a physical attack it seems like a boy who cried wolf situation. So they just turn that part of their brain off.

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #1 9h

I mean sure but it’s not as if the word attack doesn’t have multiple ways it could be interpreted. There’s not one set definition. If we went through the world with every word having one exact set definition then that’d be kinda a problem

Would we? We have (or so they say) 1 BILLION words. I’m all for not letting any one institution decide what any of them really mean, but there’s something to be said for knowing people’s language within a language. Famous example, kind of funny cuz no one died, when marines were training to do like, back up the LAPD if the riots got out of hand and it turned super violent, during a training op one of the cops was like “cover me!” But those words to a marine are “start shooting cuz I’m 1/2

/2 about to run from here to over there. But to cops it just means hey keep your gun pointed where the threat is. Same words, two different pictures in multiple people’s heads. I don’t pretend to have an answer here I’m just hoping we work through it together, but stuff like that, I guess it’s beneficial to both parties to discuss what a word or phrase means to them so we have a more accurate picture of what’s going on in both of our minds.
