Non-whites have always been an integral part of American society from the very beginning. The early colonial settlements weren’t white, they were full of Native American laborers, African slaves and freemen, and even some Asians. Small numbers of Indian indentured servants came to Maryland and Virginia since the 1600s, and Filipino settlements have been in Louisiana since the 1700s.
