Even if he was, that was sadly a necessary evil back then. It was the only option he had before the civil war, because how else was he to free the slaves? And please don’t give me that “oh, but viowence is wong!” Bs. Sometimes you gotta take last resorts, even if theyre violent

He was an insurrectionist. His methods were illegitimate and the government had an obligation to stop him and punish him. You can be morally right in one way but still cross a line when you take up arms against your country.

He was an insurrectionist. His methods were completely justified and the government had an obligation to take his side or dissolve itself for illegitimacy. You can say one correct thing and still be a slaver-sympathizing fuckwit with the rest of your breath.
