i think part of the problem is “support their country” is really vague. like i support america (want a good future for its people) but not Trump. most Iranians support Iran but not the Islamic Republic. a lot of Palestinians support Palestine but not Hamas or the PA. and a lot of Israelis support Israel but not Netanyahu’s government
I think most people from a country usually support their country as a concept. But in many cases people have a responsibility to criticize their government. Sure, you expect someone from that country to be more likely to support that government than someone from outside it, but if that government is doing something bad you should condemn it. Americans don’t get a free pass for supporting Trump just because they’re American.
And I think there’s a further distinction, because the primary victims of the Iranian government are fellow Iranians, while the primary victims of the Israeli government are Palestinians. An Iranian believing “well this is worth it for the wellbeing of Iranians as a whole” is different than an Israeli person supporting harm towards a separate nation of people.
I’m pretty critical of religion in general lol so I don’t think the Iranian government is unrelated. Like it is a direct result of theocracy and conservative religion. I’m just saying there’s more nuance there and that being from a place doesn’t really absolve someone from the responsibility of taking a moral stance. It can help explain why they aren’t taking that stance, but it doesn’t excuse it if that makes sense.
