Genuine question: why is it illegal to drink on the street? Like, if you can chain smoke cigarettes out doors, why can’t I just sip a beer as I talk a walk through my downtown? One of the weirdest laws that most places follow imoCigarette are not behavior altering drugs. It’s just chemicals. It’s illegal to drink in public because people will get drunk in public and then become dangerous to people and themselves and take resources away. So instead of banning being drunk in public they banned drinking because it’s easier to police people getting drunk than it is to police people already drunk.
I suppose I understand that logic but like, the existence of bars doesn’t do much at all to halt someone getting drunk and then going out and about around town intoxicated. All you’re doing is localizing where the intoxication is happening to a particular place. Which, yeah, I can see how that helps police drunkenness, but it’s not illegal to be publicly intoxicated in general to begin with lol
Or at the very least, public intoxication is rarely enforced unless someone is starting trouble. No one is arresting the friend group of happy 20 somethings stumbling across downtown, laughing and smiling and drunk off their asses. Idk, whole thing seems marginally beneficial to me.
