Some blue color workers be the most delusional people on the planet. Had a guy trying to argue with a surgeon that he probably makes more than him.

Depending on where they are in their careers that could be accurate when you factor in medical school debt

Even if you factor in medical school debt, the reality is that a doctor, especially a surgeon, is pulling in way more than the vast majority of blue-collar workers

You can probably make a case if it’s like a part-time family medicine or pediatrics physician

Well that’s why I say depending on where they are in their careers. A beginner surgeon likely takes home less pay than a seasoned welder. The paycheck of the surgeon may be greater but they start their careers with mountains of debt

But yeah obviously the surgeon will earn more overall and likely accrue more wealth

That’s not really how it works. Attendings usually do make the same regardless of their experience and any difference in pay will likely come from Medicare reimbursements etc or extra pay for faculty related positions. To put it in a perspective, general surgeons at my hospital, who usually tend to make less money for a surgical specialty are usually paid at around $400,000 straight out of residency.

And also most blue-collar people also have significant amounts of debt. They just spend their money on other things besides education.

Blue color workers love to cope by saying we’re in debt as if half of them don’t have insane truck payments. Also the debt usually gets paid off pretty immediately with an attending salary.

Yeah as long as you ain’t buying a Porsche or a Rolex right off the bat you’ll be able to pay those loans off relatively early

Ah ok, that’s not what I had heard from my nursing friends but they were new so maybe they didn’t know. I’m also not intimately aware of how much surgeons make so didn’t know this either. Still not a fan of the attitude towards blue collar workers but it is what it is

I mean nursing is a totally different ballgame from physicians and honestly I think blue collar workers are super important but the whole machismo and holier than thou attitude is annoying as fuck

Ah see I get those vibes from the other side. The “surgeons are the saints of the professional world” thing. But ik the generalizations and harmful stereotypes to both ways. We really just need cheaper medical school and more people going into trades as opposed to communication or some other vague default 4 year degree

I have gotten that vibe from some blue collar folks tho, I do know what you mean

Cheaper med school for sure would especially help with the shortage of IM/FM/EM docs for sure. And yeah I’ve seen way too many people with weird ass degrees work jobs with no college diploma requirements so I get ur point there.

You should look into how they set up the education system in France I think that’s something we could emulate here
