Technically he didn’t enslave anyone. They were enslaved in Africa and sold here. He owned them yes but didn’t do the actual enslaving.

A reminder that this is a man who sold his own children into slavery to help found the empire of freedom. President Jefferson is in hell.

If you were alive back then I bet you would’ve had 700 slaves during your lifetime… you’re even worse than him when you consider that 700 > 600

“Oh yeah if you were alive you’d probably own more slaves” is a fucking batshit claim especially considering only a minuscule segment of society at that time owned a significant number of slaves, AND the northern states were already abolishing slavery during his lifetime.

It’s not a fallacy because Jefferson wasn’t making an argument, he was making a statement about his own actions. There is no argument that is being deflected from by attacking his character

Truly speaks to OP’s character that they’d have 700 slaves even though the northern states were already abolishing slavery and you had to be very rich to have that number of slaves… I don’t think we’re dealing with a good person here guys

This is not a semantic you want to die on. Because this is like saying “Im not a kidnapper! Someone ELSE grabbed them in their van, and i just am holding them in my basement tied up! I didn’t kidnap them.” That logic isn’t sound and is ahistorical, as well. Slavery only existed because demand did: and those who participated in the demand like Jefferson were a part of the process of enslavement, whether you like it or not.

Omg lol your go to was AI. You know why it says “evaluating the ideas themselves”? Because ad hominem is contingent upon there being an argument that is being deflected from. Thomas Jefferson wasn’t presenting an argument. The post relies upon his personal authority to imply “everyone should be like him in this way.” The AI doesn’t know the context bruh

The Arabic slave trade of subsaharan African slaves was multitudes larger and more cruel, however all male slaves were castrated so they could no reproduce. And yes Africans were primarily sold and traded by Africans, usually taken as prisoners of war. Slavery was not brought to Africa by whites and Danes weren’t venturing into the Congo to get slaves. This is not even politically charged or disputed information, it’s well accepted history.

Yes but it is not enslaving. They are different words with different meanings. I am correct on the semantics.

A lot of the slaves in Africa were sourced from inter-tribal warfare. The slavers wouldn’t view those who they were enslaving as “their own people” because they were from different tribes. In some cases they would have been from the same culture but very often not.

This is true. But if this is the case then you cannot collectivize the danish, English, Spanish, etc as white people. Either collectivize with race theory or don’t but it cannot be one sided.

Arabs didn’t castrate all their slaves. Castration had a high mortality rate, it was not cost effective to castrate every slave. Castrated slaves were usually intended for specific uses, such as harem guards. Europeans usually bought from African rulers, but they would sometimes venture into Africa to capture slaves themselves. This was more common in the early colonial days prior to established slavery export infrastructure systems.

I do not view slavery as an exclusively white thing. Whiteness is useful to discuss in this context because it was how the Europeans ideologically justified slavery, but slavery was common across many societies.
