Why are New England states the bluest states in the country in presidential elections, but manage to elect Republican governors?

For context, this is the Republican New Hampshire governor’s site highlighting the first 100 days of her governorship. These are basically all moderate positions. I’d believe it if you told me a Democrat governor did all these things and highlighted them

im a democrat from MA and i really liked Charlie Baker (our republican governor until 2023). he was very centrist, very pragmatic, also just a nice guy (met him a couple times). i remember he was really strong on sustainability issues and he was very anti-Trump

Because until recently our republicans were normal people. I’d wager most still are compared to the rest of the country.

NH is purple and kinda libertarian. Idk much about Ayotte but Sununu seemed kinda reasonable and I think he was well-liked

So are New England Republicans like moderate Democrats or something? I’m so shocked Vermont has a Republican governor and Massachusetts had one until 2023

That’s kinda refreshing to hear. New Hampshire seems like the oddball out though

I guess with the exception of “cooperating with federal authorities to enforce immigration laws” that is

i think a nice thing about moderate republican candidates in strong dem states and vice versa is that they have to be very pragmatic and concrete in their policies in order to win, and that makes other candidates have to respond similarly. if everyone’s in the same party sometimes it becomes a lot about ideology and infighting— like who is the “better” democrat— instead of policy

My state (DE) used to elect republicans sometimes, until the Tea Party came along. Christine O’Donnell (not a witch) beat Mike Castle (who was the favorite for the general) in a primary and then got her ass handed to her by Chris Coons in 2010. Hasn’t voted Republican for president since 1996 though
