If someone jokes about if their groupchat gets leaked then that should be grounds for a school or employer to search their phone. You can’t joke about shit like that and expect to have zero consequences
If they’re potentially spewing Nazi propaganda or hate speech then yeah they deserve whatever consequences they get

this isn’t a hypothetical btw, at my last job someone got fired bc a text she sent another coworker complaining about our boss got leaked. the whole company had a meeting about it.
giving your employer search warrant privileges is NOT going to be good on balance

The simple solution is to have the boss not told what is there unless HR deems it a fireable offense

especially in small companies, there isn’t always a dedicated “HR” person, or HR is the CEO’s wife (like at my aforementioned job)
and even if you do have a dedicated HR department that doesn’t warrant making them literal cops
