smartphones have only been around since the late 2000s. children have progressively spent less time outside over the past century and it is observable throughout much of NA and Europe, with much of it being tied to car-exclusive infrastructure. until the 1990s most children walked to school. that was also when the push for individualized automobiles became greater (many families shared a car before)

smartphones have made drivers more unsafe though, and they, paired with the increasing size of vehicles, have dramatically increased car-pedestrian fatalities. driving with your phone in hand should be treated as a DUI tbh

yes, and this is related to cars. it’s illegal bc it’s “unsafe”. parents should not be arrested for allowing their children to explore their communities. just american problems though
