The left will fundamentally never have that. Everything that was built or achieved in this country is somehow a product of imperialism, racism, colonialism and class conflict. Can’t have patriotism if the narrative is built almost entirely on critique.Maybe I’m wrong, but it also seems to me that the left, in their zeal to stand against MAGA, begins turning towards sympathy and even support for America’s enemies, under the logic that if Trump hates them, they must be good. Defending China, Iran, North Korea, etc., solely to get back at MAGA essentially destroys any chance you have of being seen as a genuine patriot.
The response will always be something along the lines of an ultimatum. The left will frame the conversation as a “oh so you support those things/ignore those things that built this country?”, because questioning your beliefs and worldview is easier than building their own. MAGA is the other side of this coin by completely ignoring any historical injustice. The left and MAGA have the same thought processes.
When I use left, I’m specifically talking about Marxist-Leninists. You’re definitely on the mark about supporting Iran, China, etc. It’s a form of class conflict logic. The United States is the oppressor and the glorious Islamic Republic are the oppressed. It’s not that Iran is good to them, it’s just that the United States is bad.
Not really. For some perspective, the transgender population 0.5-1% of the country while self-proclaimed communists are like 0.01-0.1%. Social media is worldwide and amplifies them due to algorithm shit. Even if you add self-proclaimed socialists, they’re still a smaller population.
To add to it though, they’re not really relevant in regard to getting their own policies enacted. They are relevant as a tool for conservatives and far right actors though. They use MLs and socialists as a caricature to push moderate liberals slightly to the right. This was done with topics like abortion, trans rights, race relations, etc. Taking the furthest most radical position and framing it as a shift in the Overton Window so that it seems like the norm.
