Religion being an “opiate of the masses” was never meant to be a diss. Remember that in Marx’s time opium was used as medicine. The real meaning of the quote is that religion helps the masses numb the pain of living under class oppression but also pacifies them to the point of keeping them from rising up. And frankly it’s an overly simplistic view by Marx, religion has played an important role in many liberation movements.

Zionism isn’t a religion but it’s founded on a Jewish doctrine. Just like how not every Muslim follows shariah.

it’s not religion, more the authority structures that are present within organized religions and the capacity for those structures and institutions to be used by individuals to further their own interests

i feel like people fundamentally misunderstand what is meant when religion is described as the opium of the masses. drugs are used to alleviate symptoms at least as much as they are abused for personal use
