My question is: why is it so important for an NYC mayoral candidate to pledge visiting Israel? Isn’t the point to support your people where they are, not go overseas as your first act?

As someone who lived here my whole life, we have a heavy Jewish population (including me) and sadly there’s still a lot of overlap with Zionist politics

It’s a shame that American politics conflates support for our Jewish friends with support for the state of Israel

And he’s said that he would meet with and talk to the Jewish people in NYC explicitly, saying he’d meet them wherever they are IN NYC, but people are getting mad that he won’t visit Israel and is antisemitic, despite the only things he said that were remotely antisemitic would be he believes in states with equal rights and states where all people are equal regardless of any factor

What it is is the Hasidic ppl, who are now a powerful bloc in city politics and who basically all have second homes in Israel, saying that if you wanna be friends with us, you gotta be friends with our other home
