except he literally hasnt survived that before. like the two closest things were battle beast and five episodes before. first season, gets ultimate green goblin vs day 1 miles moralesed, third season he gets every limb broken. that was by far the worst thing. if your point is that "oh the tension isnt there i know he can survive" guess what the show is named invincible, its episode 5 of 8 of season 4 of like 7. the titular character isnt gonna die, and if he does, everyones still gonna be upset
Nah there’s plenty I like about the 2nd Conquest fight thematically, I appreciate the drama of it all. The way Conquest taunts Mark for not killing him the first time, taunt him about his loved ones, only for Mark to go STRAIGHT for the kill in a way he would never do earlier in his arc is great writing. I’m still gonna call 0-2 Conquest a fraud combat-wise though lmao
ok so now youre picking up on it. conquest is the second strongest viltrumite but he is a fraud. iirc the comics state he fights like hes a spectator in his own battle. also, conquest got like genuinely unlucky. nobody ever saw eve do that shit before, cant prep for the fuck you beam, and then the i hate you lets die strangling technique isnt very easy when youve never seen it before and you realize the severity too late. for mark, like you said it does have personal significance
I have two wolves in me when I’m watching an action drama, one wolf is a plot-focused analyst who loves themes and strong characterization, is a sucker for a good arc. The other wolf is a savage power-scaler. They coexist. I can admit Conquest is a great part of the plot as an obstacle-character. I can also call him an 0-2 fraud lmfao
Conquest’s role as an obstacle definitely limits his characterization, that is true. However, any character that’s written solely as an obstacle doesn’t need to be deep to be well-written. Conquest is like Invincible’s Gregor Clegane. He doesn’t inspire much thought about himself, but boy does he force the characters we actually give a shit about to grow to address him when he stands in their way.
Like, analyzing the character of both Conquest and The Mountain, one comes to the conclusion that they are “Big & Bad” and not really that much else. Conquest’s loneliness as a result of his effectiveness is something, but it’s still not deep. What these characters are written for is so that the more important, more fleshed out characters can face an insane challenge, and rise to meet it.
