By this same logic I can argue that we should ban anyone who drinks alcohol from owning guns lmao

The America I dream about is one where black women can defend their weed farm with select fire rifles while paying no taxes

You shouldn’t be carrying a gun while you’re under the influence, but owning a gun is your right unless proven to not be of sound mind.

Civilians shouldn’t have deadly weapons at all

Cool, corporate boot licker… I personally would rather not have to pay a toll every single time I need to use a public restroom or drive on a bridge.

Toll roads are awesome actually. They’re usually better maintained and put market pressure on the over reliance of cars. Imagine how much more walkable American cities would be if the government didn’t subsidize car travel.

Should I be allowed to own kitchen knives? What about a car? A hammer?

Those have non-violent primary redeeming purposes.

People use guns to hunt and protect livestock, there is a better case for gun control than “civilians can’t be trusted” especially when you look at ICE right now.

Public restrooms were unfortunately not a good example here 😭 it’s common to charge a small fee for those in Europe

I think it’s worth noting how much disproportional violence guns allow. Anyone with a working hand can pick up a gun and kill or badly wound many people in a short amount of time. A knife or hammer requires some physical strength and ability. They also don’t have any range. Also a car can’t go many places a gun can, nor is it as effective at killing (an exception here may be unprotected street level crowds).

Also yeah like 4 said, those other examples have very valid non violent use cases. If you need to hammer something or slice something, it’s hard to do without a hammer or knife. And we know how unfortunately necessary cars are in the United States. Guns on the other hand don’t have many practical use cases that makes them indispensable.

There are some valid use cases for guns yeah, hunting and protecting livestock among them. Which is why I don’t understand why we can’t have gun laws like they have in Switzerland. You can shoot on your property and hunt all you want, you just can’t carry your loaded weapon around in public, gotta carry the ammo separately. Only security guards and police carry loaded weapons, which makes sense

Also on the ice point, how would guns be useful here? Short of an armed civil war or some other type of all out armed conflict, how are personal firearms useful against ice or other government overreach? Sorry if I’ve asked you this question before, I know I return to it a lot. I just haven’t really heard any practical situations where a civilian having a gun is helpful here

I don’t think warfare in the streets is a good idea! my point is that our “trusted” civil servants actually suck, so there’s nothing qualifying them to be armed over us

Many of our civil servants (police specifically) suck, I absolutely agree, but I don’t think that’s enough to back up your claim. We desperately need serious police reform, lemme just say that first. Lots of systemic injustices, corruption, all that. But there is a big difference between police having guns and random people having guns. Police are uniformed and visible, can be fired for misconduct, usually wear body cams, receive firearm training, have rules of engagement…etc.

Those things qualify them to be armed over your average citizen. And again, how would civilian firearms be useful in this political moment anyway? I genuinely see how just having one might make you feel safer but I just can’t think of a single real use case for it
