um yay but why does the way this headline is written feel like there was even a chance to lose birthright citizenship to begin with? Feels like they’re subtly giving credibility to Trump attempting to overturn birthright citizenship 😒

Well I mean there was a chance, trump and his Supreme Court are nuts. I don’t think they’re giving credibility to that insanity by just acknowledging the possibility of a ridiculous ruling

They heard the case, after all. They could have just rejected hearing it and auto upheld lower courts decisions to block the EO. But no, they heard it. So there’s always a chance they’ll decide differently if they even heard it

News publications are writing in a way meant to favor the Administration because they're worried about interference from the DOJ and FCC. It's the intended effect of Trump fucking with Colbert, Kimmel and others.

there was never a chance birthright citizenship was going completely out the window bc that wasn’t the question of the case

Not completely sure but the trump admin wants to severely limit who it applies to and wants to strip that status away from people who currently enjoy it; that’s likely what the article is referring to

yeah but what i’m saying is that if the court were to rule in his favor it wouldn’t be a complete end to birthright citizenship

idk why yall downvoted this, it's what's going on and it's happened before. similar "chilling effect" tactics have been used over and over again by many repressive gov'ts.

There is a chance for some people to lose birthright citizenship. The court is posed to protect birthright citizenship for those who may lose it

I don’t disagree that the tactic is being used, he’s absolutely attacking news outlets resulting in a chilling effect. I’m just saying that rhetorical analysis wise I’m not sure that this article is clearly tailoring wording bc of that. There’s a real chance that the trump admin would try to and possibly succeed in removing birthright citizenship from people and it seems to me like the guardian is just acknowledging that possibility
