Both movements had/have the goal of maintaining or restoring white hegemony / dominance When electoral outcomes or democratic processes threaten their power (the elections of Abraham Lincoln and Joe Biden), both movements rejected legitimate governance (Secession from the Union and January 6th attack on the Capitol)

Both movements mobilized supporters by creating a shared sense of grief and cultural displacement by scapegoating marginalized communities (trans people, slaves, immigrants, progressive institutions and politicians, etc.) Both movements used historical revisionism and fake history to romanticize their movements (Confederates minimize role of slavery in secession, MAGA minimizes systemic racism in the U.S.’s history)
