I’m sorry but if a single twink bouncing around on the sidelines during a football game is all it takes for you to quit watching the sport you’re a massive fucking snowflake lol. Pussy shit to ditch a whole fandom over that stufflike I’ll admit that the Buzzfeed Lib era of like 2014-17 was an atrocious era for the optics of being on the left, and those libs were saying some crazy shit, but that’s what happens when you try to be progressive on everything BUT the economy, you eventually just get on some niche shit that most people think sounds kinda crazy
And these people expect you to take their little temper tantrums seriously and actually get mad at this stuff with them, like any of it is a legit issue worth giving attention. Like, no dude, I’m not gonna freak out over gay dudes cheering in football, we’ve got bigger fish like homelessness and addiction rates to fry
Like, the “snowflake era” that I saw wasn’t so much LEFTISTS as it was liberals trying to do identity politics without real material and systematic issues being addressed, especially the way a lot of that “progressivism” was always directed at people’s individual actions rather than actual systems of oppression
for sure, although until pretty recently those terms were interchangeable in the minds of the vast majority of americans the “individuals actions rather than systems” is a good point that I surprisingly haven’t heard, some of the stuff related to language is a great example
Like, my old college roommate who I lived with for four years was raised real religious and conservative, and when I explained the concept of privilege to him I wasn’t like “YOU have white privilege YOU need to acknowledge immediately” as the LEAD of the conversation, I talked about how everywhere we see clean water crises go unresolved in America is a predominantly-Black area and said “either the pipes are racist, or the politicians are” and he got that shit. Messaging is absolutely critical.
Yeah, every time I meet conservative people where they are and explain things in terms they know and understand, and avoid the buzzwords that they have a trained dismissal response to, they’ve understood what I was saying to them. And I get if some people don’t have the patience for it, but those people also cannot be our primary messengers.
a big ingredient of that is not immediately coming at them with the implication that 100% of what they believe is wrong, which is what a lot of the language we’re talking about conveys if someone things 95% of your views are misguided they’re open to having a conversation, if they think 100% of your views are misguided they’re calling you stupid, evil, or some combination of the two
