I think the common understanding is that we thank the individuals for their service because sometimes they didn’t know better. But we hate it as an institution

They were essentially pawns. Congress was the kings, bishops, and rooks. The president was the king

My issue with that is that I think people use that as an excuse. To join the military you need a high school diploma and almost any high school history course should teach what our military has done. I went to high school in Massachusetts, and for my US Geography class we had a whole unit on the controversy regarding the military in various wars and the human rights violations committed by the US.

And unlike Isntreal, which military service is compulsory, joining the military in the US is completely voluntary. People join it to commit “legal” murder and for their own selfish gain at the sacrifice of others.

I don’t think most schools address the human rights violations. I went to a private school and Latin America was never addressed. Nothing after WWII was addressed IIRC. Recruiters prey on people who are poor and desperate to escape poverty. Sometimes those people simply end up guarding embassies or fixing airplanes. Other times they end up on the front lines in the Middle East

Really? I thought it would’ve been common throughout the US. Regardless, people still take pride from being in the military long after their service. Recruiters being at high schools should not be a thing, like at all. I do agree they prey upon the impoverished, but I still think people should take it upon themselves to research before even considering.

And maybe if we started shaming them more instead of putting them on a pedestal, people would be more reluctant to join.

I agree, but I know I expected way too many people to do research, as evidenced by the past 10 years 😭
