I’m very proud of my ethnicity - Irish and German. I don’t understand people who critique White people for saying that

I think there’s a difference in being proud of being Irish/German/French/ Polish/whatever and being proud of being white

nobody does? there’s a difference between valuing your ancestry and valuing your race. whiteness isn’t real, it’s constructed. 250 some years ago Benjamin Franklin thought Germans were too “swarthy”. Until a little over 100 years ago Irish were seen as racially inferior alongside Italians and Eastern / Southern Europeans. “White” is meaningless. There is no shared white culture or history. It’s a club that has expanded when convenient and vice versa.

I mean like, to me it’s sorta the same? “White” is an amalgamation of various ethnicities, just like “Black” is. Although I understand that through slavery, many Black people do not know their homeland or ethnic background, they are both still just vague descriptions of where a person is from

The difference is that “white pride” is a creation of white supremacy. Realistically, what shared identity do Americans, Poles, French, etc, have? It’s not based on culture, it’s based on a belief in racial superiority. Being proud of your ancestral or regional culture doesn’t have this problem. Black pride, on the other hand, is a pride in jointly resisting chattel slavery, discrimination, and colonization. White pride and black pride sound similar but they’re totally different things

That’s the way I see it at least

No I understand that totally fine, and I’m absolutely not condoning the White supremacist version of “White pride.” That’s despicable. I personally see pride in my whiteness as a pride in my joined ethnicities. I’m part Irish, German, Italian, and Manx. To me, I feel pride in all of these, which come together as a pride in my ethnic background, which would generally be considered White. I will NEVER say “White pride” is public, however, bc I am aware of the connotations it has

Idk, I think there’s room for nuance and to separate the idea of being proud of a joint ethnic background from the idea of being proud of your skin color
