Republican commentators and politicians come out in droves to denounce mass shootouts, I can’t help but think this is a strawman.

He wasn’t a white supremacist. That’s the problem. You guys tarnish people you don’t like to the point of defending violence against them based on false labels. That’s part of how we got here

It’s extremely sad to see so many people filled with hate for someone while barely knowing what they actually believe. Kirk had some major missteps, especially early in his career, but he really grew and matured throughout it (I’m sure having a kid played a role in that). He was a man fighting for what he thought was right, and died doing so. Disagree or not, death is a tragedy. RIP

Massive missteps that he never retracted or recanted

rest in peace to melissa hortman, the minnesota state democratic representative. rest in peace to her husband as well. they were murdered by a man disguised as a police officer, vance boelter. “Authorities in Minnesota said Monday that the man [Vance Boelter] arrested in a Saturday attack that killed one state lawmaker and left another wounded had a "hit list" of 45 elected officials — all Democrats.” npr.com

He thought gay marriage should be illegal, and disagreed with rights for trans people. The man was a peace of shit. I won’t justify it, but I also wouldn’t call it a "tragedy."

Just because you disagreed with his stances on certain issues doesn’t mean that he was a peace of shit. He had 8 million followers on TikTok. 8 million people who agreed with him. Would you be alright if all of those people were killed? Hell, the number of people who agree with his stances on the things you mentioned is definitely way higher than 8 million, should we just kill all those people?

I won’t say that all those people should be killed. But they are absolutely all pieces of shit, yes. Homophobes and transphobes should not be respected, and I would not mourn any of their deaths should they occur.

It does not matter, political assassination is a threat to democratic norms.

Even political assassination of those who threaten democratic norms?

Most politicians get accused of threatening norms at some point, if we normalized political assassinations the country wouldn’t survive

No. This point in the history of American politics is categorically different than any previous time. Ignoring this is just naive.

It is unique but not so unique that the country isn’t equipped to deal with it. Trump isn’t the first president to overstep the limits of executive power.

That is how I felt during his first term. During his second term, I have been completely disillusioned with American government and maybe even democracy as a whole.

I’m not sure anyone really benefits from political assassination unless you’re determined to have a civil war.

To be honest it feels like the administration has been defined more by incompetence than anything else

I’m not going to advocate for political assassination. The absolute farthest I’m inclined to go is to be glad it happened. I don’t think an isolated incident of random violence has the large-scale impacts on our political system that you’re implying.

My catastrophizing was about what would happen if assassinating politicians actually did become common like it is in some places. This brings us a step closer but for now we are still in the clear

It’s not common. It’s illegal, and the shooter is being pursued so that they can be imprisoned, as it should be.

They do nothing about school shooting but they want to actually do stuff to prevent another Charlie Kirk

Well they don’t want to give up gun rights. Idk what rights republicans are asking us to give up over this
