Mainstream, conservative evangelicalism really is a study in cognitive dissonance. The highest good to which one can aspire is basically self-annihilation through ego death and reformation into a cognitive locus for never ending pleasure. But any concrete form of being in which pleasure is naturally found is the very disease from which freedom is sought. And it can only be achieved through obsessive, egoic self-service and present delight in the future suffering of others.
