As someone with relatives who were in prison, it’s provided. However, it’s never enough to sustain an active body. Prisoners pay the kitchen workers (other prisoners) for stuff like extra eggs/protein. Also since prisons are typically for profit and a lot are privatized, you’re indirectly paying for your own meals through the value you provide to the prison.
