My mom works for the FDA as part of the team who reads the research papers on upcoming medicines. She worked a ton with mRNA There had been trials for niche diseases with mRNA, but the tech was largely unproven. You’re right it did really bring that to the cutting edge of immunology, but at the expense of most of the long term studies to determine long term side effects and overall effectiveness

That, and the FDA cut their minimum effectiveness requirements for Covid vaccines. The early vaccines were, compared to other yearly vaccines, far less effective than normal. Still generally effective, but “shitty” in terms of a widely dispersed vaccine
