I actually read a book about this recently called The Sixth Extinction which was talking about how the destruction of ecosystems, climate change, and pollution from human activity is genuinely causing an extinction-like collapse in biodiversity. I’m guessing this isn’t exactly what you’re referring to but it was a good read
