Because news and media is a business and functions like a business, meaning doing what ever makes them profitable and not what makes them trustworthy. Every single large news outlet will say anything in their headlines and articles based on a smallest rumor that they haven’t confirmed just to stir up fear or anger or any other emotion that is profitable for them in their readers.

Newspapers and media as a whole have a primary objective to sell as many as possible. It’s the same reason why old tabloids would run with stories about aliens and giants. AP achieves that objective by being factual. AP and Gallup >>>

That’s why when an event happens, only trust the small local media. Big news is big bullshit. If you read something from a big media company or news outlet, find local sources to verify.

The small local media is usually affiliated with a national broadcaster (ABC, NBC, etc.) and owned by a large company (Nexstar, Sinclair, etc.) though

Okay, what would you suggest for a way to get news in an area you aren’t actively involved in?

I still believe small media is better as they actively can just check sources right away and have to be more truthful since locals will know when they are just lying, but that’s my personal opinion

Honestly zero clue. Local news is decent but just beware that they sometimes have a narrative that the owner is telling them to run (e.g. make people scared of crime, don’t report anything about the Nexstar merger)
