Common idioms I don’t understand - you can’t have your cake and eat it too (why not) - break the ice (no don’t do that you’ll fall in the water) - by the skin of your teeth (teeth don’t have skin)

for the cake one - once you eat a cake, you don’t have it anymore. think spending vs hoarding money for break the ice, I think of ice fishing. Can’t get at the good shit underneath if there’s ice. also, my understanding is the “skin of the teeth” thing is from a mistranslation of a Bible verse
