Unpopular opinion (maybe): US prisons are inhumane, they don’t focus on rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. We need to stop focusing on punishment. US uses death penalty, yet still has some of the highest crime and recidivism rates in the West.

Yeah the fear of death isn’t stopping criminals and I’m tired of my tax dollars being used to kill people when statistics show that it costs less to keep someone in maximum security for the rest of their life. The even cheaper option is focusing on rehab for petty criminals so we can set them up to enter back into society, thrive, and not require our tax dollars to just sit and rot in prison

I believe we misuse the death penalty. We’re not killing the right people. You know?

complains about high crime rates in the USA complains about lack of rehabilitation ???? Other countries with low crime rates do not rehabilitate at all.

You though this was a gag but our current justice system already releases violent criminals, that’s why there’s such a high recidivism rate…

Yes! Relatively petty criminals are kept in our for-profit prisons in horrid conditions where pests are rampant, food is subpar, and we’re just expected to think prison r@pe is okay???? Criminals are treated like animals, and we wonder why so many come out worse than before they went in, which then furthers the risk to the public.

Not to mention the criminals come out more violent than before. That’s not rehabilitation.

I’d suggest looking it up before making a claim… all evidence suggests that rehabilitation has significantly more success than punishment based incarceration. It results in less net recidivism, and actually costs the tax payers less in the long run because of that

The reason why other countries have crazy low crime rates is because of the stigma with crimes that you don’t see in the states. Japan has crazy people like we do but they just commit suicide, not shoot up a school. There are vids of ppl leaving Ferrari keys, wallet and Rolex on hoods of Ferraris on a busy street in Dubai for days no one steals. Why? They cut off your hand

Your idea of let’s be nice to them to fix them isn’t the best method. The best way to prevent crime is by being harsher and having a stigma around it. Jason is one of the lowest gun violence rates, why? It’s nearly impossible to own a gun. They know there are crazy people and you can’t fix all by rehabilitation.

You can look at the state by state level in the United States. If your claim was true, states with harsher punishments would have lower rates of those crimes, but they don’t. Furthermore, the harsh criminal sentencing we institute have been shown to later raise the future rate of crime from that individual. That’s because either they get fucked up in prison, or because with a felony it’s extremely hard to get a job. “Tough on crime” just doesn’t work
